After our lovely time in Austria, we headed to Switzerland via train from Innsbruck – switching trains in Zurich and ending in Geneva, Switzerland about an hour outside of Annecy, France. We utilized a website called blablacar.com to get a ride in Geneva with a lovely French woman who picked us up at the train station and dropped us off at our B & B in Annecy for 8€!! WOW!!! It was amazing and we so enjoyed our conversation with her! If you are traveling in Europe I highly recommend you use this car sharing website.
Annecy is a lovely romantic town in the south of France. Annecy sits on the northern part of the Lac d’ Annecy (Annecy Lake) and is surrounded by 360 degree views of the Alps. The lake is one of the cleanest and purest lakes in all of Europe and it shows in the deep blue color of the crystal clear water.
We stayed just outside of Annecy with the most wonderful French family who run a B & B out of their home. Probably one of our favorite hosts in all our time in Europe. When we arrived, they invited us out onto their beautiful deck for drinks and dessert and an evening full of wonderful cultured conversation. They even had free bikes for us to use for our time in Annecy! It was about a 20 minute bike ride into town.
We explored the town and strolled along the bright blue water filled canals. Cafes and shops line the vibrantly colored streets; there are lovely sandwich and crepes stands around every corner. There is a huge and very endearing park situated right on the lake. Tall & large trees cover the area, making it cool with a nice breeze coming in off the lake. We grabbed some lunch and spent several hours sitting under the trees people watching, reading, and gazing at the beach. There are also some very lovely beaches right on the lake we spent some time on also. You can bike or walk all the way around the lake. With mountains in view in every direction it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the beauty surrounding you!
Annecy reminded me a lot of our time on the Italian Cineque Terra or in the quaint village of Hallstatt, Austria – just dreamy little towns that hold more their fair share of the countries culture, food, and character. We really, really LOVED our time in Annecy and highly, highly recommend it!
