Everyone knows coming home after an adventure, trip, or vacation feels so wonderful to be around all the familiarities & comforts of home…But when you wake up 12 hours later and you are no longer gazing at the Eiffel Tower, swimming in clear blue ocean water & breathing salty ocean air, hiking the glorious mountains, or eating new & yummy foods – MAJOR SADZ SET IN. It can really be quite depressing and make you completely unmotivated to re-enter the ‘real world’ life.
I have come up with several things that we do after any trip to help remedy those post-vaca sads. The first thing Joe and I always do is (1) start planning your next trip! I know you just spent your whole travel budget on your trip but vision always produces better results – so even if your next trip won’t be for 6 more months or 3 more years – you’ll save better and there will always be something on your calendar to look forward to – YAY! Joe and I are starting to plan our next grand adventure even though we just returned from our last one.
My second remedy for those post vacation blues is (2) re-create special moments from your trip. Anytime you travel you’ll experience new culture, food, clothing, architecture, etc and be inspired. So, if there was a food you particularly loved – re-create it for a fun Saturday night in! I’m sure there is some type of clothing or décor that stood out during your trip – put together an outfit or DIY project inspired from your time away. Or, make time to start learning phrases from the language where you just were, if you traveled abroad. Doing things to bring inspiration from your trip into your everyday life will be inspiring and oppose post trip depression.
Thirdly (3) document your vaca/trip! This is so important that your photos don’t live in your iPhone, SD card, or computer hard drive forever! Take time to go through your pictures – print your favorites and update one or two frames in your home. Journal your favorite moments from your trip and savor the feeling of remembering before the monster of time passing steals the memories away.
Lastly (4) create little escapes in your everyday life. Create a beautiful backyard Sunday picnic, go berry picking, take a drive in the country, or a walk in the city, buy yourself flowers & chocolate because it’s Thursday – do things to make your ‘mundane’ life extraordinary! Life is always meant to be beautiful whether you are backpacking Europe, sitting on the beach, or living everyday life in your hometown.
Happy travels & returns!
