We landed at 9:50am and quickly got our boarding passes for our flight to Nairobi for the evening. It’s very easy to navigate to the airport lockers & get through passport control. We stopped at an ATM and bought train tickets into the city. From Schiphol Airport to Central Station is 8euro round trip per person and is about a 15-minute train ride. Central Station is in a great location that gives you easy access to canal rides, restaurants and museums. We were out into the city by around 11am, which was great for landing just over an hour earlier.
We did decide to do a canal ride while were there, as much as is a tourist activity it gave us the chance to see the city in about an hour and a half. It costs anywhere from 12-15euro per person, which is expensive but Joe & I definitely felt it was worth it afterwards. We enjoyed it so much, mostly just having the opportunity to see so much of the city in such a short time.
We walked around Amsterdam for a long while taking in the canals and amazing architecture. We ate lunch and grabbed coffee at a local shop and then headed back to Schiphol with about 2 hours until our flight left. By the way, Schiphol has THE MOST COMFORTABLE free lounges complete with cushy chairs to sleep in and a grand piano. It is easy to miss the lounges, which we did for over an hour, but we were so excited to rest in comfy armchairs after we toured the city.
It was a great way to break up our trip, breathe some real air, eat some real food, and enjoy a new city.
