Hello Internet world! Welcome to Away We Go! My name is Joseph Lewin. My wife Megan and I love to travel and this blog will be the host of stories, pictures, videos and maybe a tip or two from our adventures!
In just four short weeks my beautiful wife and I will be embarking on a journey. From the lush green landscape of western Kenya, to the Vatican in Rome, the Eifel tower in Paris, to the coast of Ireland. We will be spending nearly seven months seeing some of the most amazing places on earth! The best part of it all is that we will get to spend a ton of time living life together and sharing in some incredible experiences on the other side of the globe. What more could anyone ask for?
I can’t tell you how many times people have said to me, “this will be the trip of a lifetime.” I wholeheartedly disagree. Last time Megan and I went to Africa I heard the same words. When my brother and I traveled to Israel and on another occasion to Whales, I heard the same words. The trip of a lifetime infers that one probably will not have an experience like this again. But I sure hope that this is the start of the journey of a lifetime full of travel. Not a one-time shebang, but the start of something new. The first of many such adventures.
Planning for this trip started last August when we returned home from a ten-day trip in Kenya. We knew we had to go again and for longer next time. Since that time we have been doing a lot of travel research, buying gear, learning about international development and scouring travel blogs. Over the past five months we have been on an extreme budget and have both clocked countless hours of overtime. Some weeks were up to seventy hour work weeks. Overtime is rough for the moment, but when we are hanging out in eighty degree weather while our friends in Cincinnati are freezing their buns off, I think the overtime will have paid off. This trip is very rewarding because we have worked very hard to save up almost all of the money to go ourselves. It has been a LOT of hard work but we are excited to be starting our grand adventure!
Before I get ahead of myself, I should start with a few more of the details of our upcoming trip. January 21st we will embark on this grand adventure. First we will be headed to Kenya for five months. Kakamega, Kenya is a little town in the southwestern portion of Kenya. It is only two hours from Lake Victoria. Megan and I are part of a non-profit organization called Waweza Movement. Most of our time will be spent in Kakamega as on the ground staff for Waweza Movement.
Waweza Movement runs and orphanage that houses forty kids in Kakamega. We will be working at the orphanage laying gardens, fixing fences, teaching hygiene, health, English and maybe even cooking over an open fire, Kenyan style.
We will leave Kenya in mid-May and start our European tour. We are still in the planning stage of this part of our trip. A few of the countries we are planning to visit in our forty days in Europe are: Italy, Croatia, Greece, Austria; Switzerland, France, England and Ireland. Trains and buses will become a regular part of everyday life while we take in amazing architecture, rich history and deep culture.
We are very excited about this trip and we are excited to have this blog so that all of you can keep up with our life while we are gone. We are blessed to be doing what so many people talk about but few people actually do!
Until next time,
